Halo movie resurfaces; Spielberg to helm? August 10th, 2009

IESB are reporting that Steven Spielberg may be taking up the Halo movie gig, a couple years after his Tintin pal Peter Jackson dropped the project. There’s no conclusive proof and the rumor sources are “studio executives” and “close ties to CAA”; what do the rumors say?

“[Steven Spielberg is] currently in active negotiations to develop the feature film adaptation”

The story is hyped up with details of Spielberg’s video game hobbies and suggested fascination of the latest Stuart Beattie “Fall of reach” script, aka a Master Chief back story originally written in 2001 by Erik Nylund. We’re taking this one with a grain of salt. BUT, it is good to see the Halo movie back in the limelight — one day, maybe, it will hit the big screens.

IESB has learned exclusively (believe me this is solid and I’ve confirmed it three times over with studio executives and our close ties to CAA) that one of the biggest producers in Hollywood history is currently in active negotiations to develop the feature film adaptation and no it’s not Jerry Bruckheimer or Peter Jackson. It’s the man behind Jaws, E.T., Indiana Jones and Transformers, Mr. Steven Spielberg.

Spielberg is blown away by writer Stuart Beattie’s take on the game in his script entitled HALO THE FALL OF REACH. This coupled with the fact that his Dreamworks umbrella is looking for a big tent pole to help launch their newly independant studio with distribution over at Walt Disney Pictures after losing Transformers to Paramount in the separation, it’s the perfect combination.

That’s great news, but only if he DIRECTS it. I don’t want Halo to become another Transformers.

Spielberg is the man for the job, I believe that. He can do amazing science-fiction movies and also war movies. 3 words : Saving Private Ryan.

I think this could be a huge mistake. I went to see District 9 last night and THAT makes me yern for a Neill Blomkamp Halo movie. Whilst Spielberg is a great director, I don’t think he can deliver the hard-hitting grit displayed by Blomklamp’s Halo Shorts.

Consider also that the new script revolves around The Fall of Reach with Halo:Reach due next year and I start to wonder if the whole Jackson/Blomkamp idea has been sold out for a quick game/movie tie-in that will undoubtedly be junk.

This movie needs to be made for the right reasons; the love of the game and the universe, if it’s made for money it will be a massive dissapointment, just like every other video game movie to date.

Anyway I hope Halo to be something more than a gory, violent action flick… I agree with your last paragraph.

I’m psyched that it will be based on the books and not just the games. If you havn’d read Fall of Reach yet, well just do it and you’ll know what I mean. If it is done right, this movie could make history. It could very well be the greatest epic/sci-fi/war…whatever you want to call it movie of all time. I realy hope it’s done right because I am expecting it to be the best. I think that Speilberg can deliver. P.S I saw District 9 and I thought that it was awsome. It was a very interesting point of view of what an Alien encouter could look like. Very well though it think anyways.

James Cameron beat Halo movie to the punch with Avatar.

Ardrich February 7th, 2010

Think about it, Spielberg = ILM
Weta is o.k., but no one beats Industrial Light and Magic.
Plus it’s a story with Aliens.….…good fit.

HaloMom December 5th, 2010

I think it should be great no matter what. My son is 7 years old and has played all the Halo games and beat them. Yes on Easy but just to hear the excitement in my sons voice that there is going to be a Halo Movie.. is the Best! Spielber has had his ups and downs just like the rest of them.. He is a great Director and I thank him for considering such a feat.. It will be hard to live up to the Halo Hype. I cant wait to see the results…
