Movie Chronicles

Trailer set to air on Feb 1st January 10th, 2009

Variety have confirmed rumors that the first Revenge of the Fallen trailer will make its appearance during the Superbowl on February 1st:

Nearly every studio will push pics during the big game, airing on NBC Feb. 1, with the movie lineup naturally made up of summer tentpoles whose studios hope to appeal to the nearly 100 U.S. million viewers that tune in to the broadcast.

Confirmed for this year’s roster are high-profile titles like Paramount’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” “Star Trek” and “G.I. Joe”; Sony’s “Angels and Demons”; DreamWorks Animation’s “Monsters vs. Aliens”; and Universal’s “Land of the Lost” and its fourth installment in “The Fast and the Furious” franchise. Disney is also planning to use the game to raise the profile for Pixar’s next toon, “Up.”

The movie blurbs will in many cases show off footage from the pics for the first time. Par has yet to unveil a single frame of the “Transformers” sequel and will use the Super Bowl to make the big reveal.

Bowing the fresh footage will generate heat for the pics considering the broadcast attracted 97 million viewers last year and consistently ranks as one of the few annual televised events in which auds pay attention to the commercials and talk about them afterward.

Revenge of the Fallen Teaser poster revealed January 10th, 2009

This poster originally showed up on eBay and has since been confirmed as the official teaser poster for Transformers 2, released by Dreamworks pictures for Yahoo Movies to use.

Michael Bay has posted a comment about the poster on his forums under the title ‘Revenge is Coming’:

Okay it’s time to turn up the heat on Transformers — Revenge of the Fallen. We’ve waited low in the weeds letting all the summer movies get their stuff out. We’ve seen the great year end movies, and watched the upcoming clips of the upcoming summer fare. We’ve seen certain movies coming out even try to duplicate Transformer size robots in their ads. Please, come on.

Well, I promise you we will rock your world with Transformers 2. The fans wanted ROBOTS KICKING ASS — well we got it. Today we are releasing the teaser poster and soon the onslaught will continue with a steady drum beat until June 26th.

I’ll keep you informed.

Enhanced Poster

This comes via Bilal and TLAMB and shows the finer details of the poster:

Theories

The predominant theory is that this is Jetfire, judging by the face’s comparisons with the Jetfire toy — note red eyes and the same ridged sides. Another theory, that I believe is equally valid, is that this is actually The Fallen, the face also very closely matches the shape of the Decepticon logo:

The official site has updated to include the poster image, in higher detail than available elsewhere, I’ve grabbed this and enhanced it:

Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard interview January 8th, 2009

Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard were recently featured on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic”; on their website you can listen to the interview and excerpts of the soundtrack or read the transcript.

Zimmer explains that each of the characters were so distinct, clearly defined and powerful that each could have musical identities that were very separate. In fact, the collaborators often split the work — Newton tackled the music for Harvey Dent, played by Aaron Eckhart, while Zimmer created the Joker’s theme.

“I kept churning around…how do you describe anarchy, how do you describe a villian and not do it in a way that’s been done before? One of the things I got very much from the character was a fearlessness, and an evenness in a way. The Joker is the only person you can trust in the movie. The Joker is the only one who will never lie to you because he is consistent about his philosophy,” said Zimmer.

“I really wanted to do the whole thing just with one note. I had this idea that rather than what a note is in the context of the notes surrounding it, what could I do emotionally through a performance within one note? How much can I stretch the meaning of a single note and get it down to such minimalism. I failed slightly. I had to use two notes in the end.”

Thanks Rachel!

Chevy Beat heading to Detroit auto show January 8th, 2009

Just had a heads up from Jalopnik that the new Chevy Beat, featured in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, will be making its way to the Detroit auto show after a sneak preview on the Today Show with Matt Lauer. Watch Video clip.

Jalopnik also speculate that the car on view will be a production model rather than a concept as previously seen in New York.

Rourke and Rockwell possible villains — Crimson Dynamo, Justin Hammer named January 8th, 2009

Variety are reporting that Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell are in talks with Paramount Pictures concerning the roles of two villains in the Iron Man sequel.

Mickey Rourke (Sin City, The Wrestler) is set to play the big baddie of the movie, Crimson Dynamo, “a heavily tattooed Russian arms dealer. He’s considered to be an evil version of Iron Man because he battles the superhero in a nuclear-powered suit of armor.”.

The Hollywood Reporter are suggesting that Sam Rockwell will play Justin Hammer, “a multibillionaire businessman and a rival of industrialist Tony Stark”.

Story of the original Crimson Dynamo from Wikipedia — possible plot spoilers below:

The first Crimson Dynamo was also the creator of the armor: Professor Anton Vanko. A Soviet scientist of Armenian birth with a PhD, Vanko was the world’s foremost expert on electricity. He built a suit that was wired up to perform electric miracles, making him a human dynamo. The Crimson Dynamo battle-suit allowed him to control electricity in all of its forms, allowing him to fire devastating bolts of electricity. It also allowed him to fly.

Vanko was a vain and cocky man, but he redeemed himself in the end. In their first encounter, the Crimson Dynamo battled Iron Man. After being tricked by Iron Man (who made him believe that his Soviet handlers were going to kill him though earlier Vanko’s superior implied he was going to kill Vanko, anyway), Vanko defected to the U.S. and went to work for Tony Stark as one of his chief scientists. Soon the Soviets came to kill him for real. They sent their top agent, the Black Widow [also rumored], and her one-time partner, Boris Turgenev, the latter of whom stole the armor and became the second Crimson Dynamo. Vanko died saving Iron Man by firing an unstable experimental laser light pistol at Boris, killing himself as well.

Note the inclusion of the Black Widow in this plot arc, a character also rumored to appear in Iron Man 2

Justin Hammer’s background via Wikipedia:

Justin Hammer was born in Surrey, England, and later became a citizen of Monaco. A rival of industrialist Anthony Stark (Iron Man), multi-billionaire businessman Hammer, himself an industrialist, later became a criminal financier. Hammer uses unethical methods. In exchange for fifty percent of the profits from their crimes, he will pay bail for costumed criminals and finance the development and replacement of their weaponry and equipment.

Video of Saturn crashing into Pole January 8th, 2009

This is another video from PhillyFilmGirl, posted a short while back but nevertheless unseen as it stands with only 700 views. This is once again from the Princeton movie shoot and shows the Saturn being driven by Sam crashing slowly into a pole:

More ROTF toy images: Biplane and boat January 8th, 2009

The-Arker have returned with new card shots of two more Revenge of the Fallen toys — their alt modes being a biplane and a gun boat respectively, despite being a little bit blurry. Once again these are unlikely to appear in the movie.

The-Arker have also posted new shots of the Jolt FAB toy’s packaging:

Would you be interested in more Transformers toy news? At the moment I am restricting the news to ROTF related developments with an aim to stay on the topic of the movie. What do you guys think?
